It happened during Tottenham's 1-0 win over West Ham at Hotspurs' White Hart Lane stadium, which one English newspaper has redubbed, "Bite Hart Lane."

Tottenham forward Jermain Defoe, after getting fouled by West Ham'sJavier Mascherano, bit the Argentine in the arm. Because referee Steve Bennett yellow-carded the biter, the English FA's initial reaction was to announce it could not impose a further punishment, to which The Times of London reacted with: "Toothless FA refuses to bite bullet over Defoe."

Defoe, who didn't draw blood, says the incident was blown out of proportion, although he admitted that, "It doesn't look great on TV and I accept that as a role model to kids I have a responsibility to conduct myself in the right way which I always try to do on and off the pitch."

Defoe was defended by his coach, Martin Jol, who said: "It is part of the game. They kicked him three times from behind in 10 minutes and he wanted to show his frustration in a nice, comical way."

Hammers coach Alan Pardew said: "Javier is fine and bears no grudges."
