We've extended our Silver XI photo gallery to include a few classic images from the most eventful quarter century in American soccer -- the Soccer America Years!
Sometimes it seems as if a picture can say a thousand words. Each of these photos speak of a point in time between 1971 and 1996 and feature events or individuals that have changed the face of the game in this country.
Can a photo give you a sense of what it's like to play the ultimate away game? View the throngs of passionate Trinidad and Tobago supporters at the final World Cup '90 qualifying game -- a must-win for the United States -- a crowd that could rattle even the most-experienced visiting player, an image that will remain with each and every US player and fan who experienced that historic day. See some of the great names in soccer history, world-beaters like Mia Hamm, Hugo Sanchez, Gerd Muller and George Best, kicking off their careers or playing out their days on American fields.
Some of these people, like Franz Beckenbauer and Steve Sampson, have already made the official Silver XI ballot. Others, like Cobi Jones, Bob Gansler, Hugo Sanchez and Gerd Muller are prime write-in candidates for the team. Whom do you believe has had the most positive impact on American soccer over the past 25 years?
We hope you like our selection of Classic Images. More will be added to the photo gallery in the weeks to come, so check 'em out!
