The 1997 MLS opening match between the San Jose Clash and the New York/New Jersey MetroStars will be played as scheduled on March 22, commissioner Doug Logan announced today.

The U.S. national team will visit and face Costa Rica in a World Cup '98 qualifying match the following day, and Logan emphasized MLS's support of the national team's quest to qualify for France '98.

"These are important qualifiers," he said. "We will cooperate with U.S. Soccer with regard to making any Major League Soccer player available. It is not our intent to change our opener or any other game during the course of the season. We are pleased with CONCACAF's qualifying schedule and look forward to a very successful qualifier on the part of the U.S. Men's national team."
