U.S. Youth national team updates (March 31)

Men's U-20 national team

The U-20s have been training in England and have compiled a 1-1-1 record against English club youth teams. The U.S. beat Manchester United's youth squad 4-0, drew 0-0 with Oldham, and fell to Tranmere 2-1. Shaun Petroski, a native of Granite City, Ill. who plays for Bayer Uerdingen in the German Second Division, scored a hat trick against Manchester United. Cal-State Fullerton's Joe DiGiamarino and South Carolina's Josh Wolff also tallied for the U.S. in last week's action. The U-20s will conclude their trip April 1 with a match against an Irish U-21 select squad in Dublin.

Women's U-20 national team

The women's U-20s just completed a training camp in North Carolina (for roster, see story in the news briefs section), where they compiled a 4-0 record against local colleges. The U-20s beat Clemson 1-0, defending NCAA champion North Carolina 2-1, Duke 4-1, and UNC-Greensboro 1-0. Meredith Florence, a striker from Dallas who will attend North Carolina in the fall, and Virginia forward Angela Hucles each scored three goals for the U.S. Laurie Schwoy, Jen Streiffer, Shannon Boxx, and Meotis Erickson also tallied for the U-20s.

Men's U-18 national team

The U-18s took part in the Paolo Valenti Tournament in Italy, and got off to a fine start with a 3-2 win over Norway and a 2-2 tie against two-time champion Iceland. A victory against Belgium would have sent the U.S. through to the semifinals, but the squad surrendered a late goal and fell 1-0. Christopher Albright was the Americans' top scorer with two goals, while Lee Morrison, Caleb Norkus, and Nino DaSilva each had a goal and an assist and Carlos Bocanegra had two assists.

USYSA ODP U-16 team

An under-16 team sponsored by the USYSA finished 14th out of 32 teams at the 25th Montaigu Football Festival in France. The team had a 2-1-3 record (including two matches decided by penalty kicks), and its only regular-time loss was to host and eventual champion France.
