Real Salt Lake Signs First Sponsorship Deal in MLS
Associated Press, November 17th, 2006 4:07PM

MOST READ

Real Salt Lake has become the first team in a major American sports league to display a sponsor's name on its jersey, according to the Associated Press. Utah-based juice company XanGo, which markets itself as a dietary supplement has reportedly signed a deal worth $4-$5 million to place its brand on the Major League Soccer team's jersey. "The name on the uniform is extremely valuable, and I really support our league doing it." Real Salt Lake owner Dave Checketts said. Just like sponsorships in Europe, the XanGo brand name will appear across the chest, replacing the words Real Salt Lake. RSL's emblem moves to the upper-left hand side of the jersey. The sale of these sponsorships will go a long way toward helping MLS clubs sign bigger names in the future, especially after the league agreed to let each team sign one player outside of the $2 million salary cap for as much as they want. RSL's deal still pales in comparison to that of a Manchester United, which this year secured a 4-year $25 million contract with U.S. insurance giant AIG. "I think our fans will be supportive of it," RSL's Checketts added. "They want the team to succeed. ... I don't see any sort of commercial backlash." Read the original story...
