MOST READ

The MLS expansion draft will take place Nov. 6 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. (ET). The Chicago Fire won the right to pick first in each of the 12 rounds of the expansion draft via a coin toss. The Miami Fusion will pick first in one of the other drafts (1998 Supplemental or 1998 College) of its choice. Each of the 10 charter MLS teams has made a minimum of 10 players (all but one of which must be American) available to the 1998 Expansion Draft, with teams exceeding the 20-man, active-roster limit due to injured reserve or other circumstances increasing the number of available players accordingly. (To see the lists of available and protected players, see the Oct. 30 story in the news briefs section of SA Online.) The draft will consist of 12 rounds, with none of the original MLS teams permitted to lose more than three players. Chicago and Miami will have a maximum of five minutes per selection, with a ten-minute break after six rounds. After a charter MLS team loses a player to either Chicago or Miami, it is permitted to withdraw one of its available players from the draft-eligible list. Charter teams have two minutes to determine who they will withdraw. Neither the Fire nor the Fusion may draft more than three goalkeepers. SA Online will have round-by-round draft coverage beginning at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
