MLS: National Team Keeper Juergen Sommer Joins Columbus
January 28th, 1998 12AM

U.S. national team goalkeeper Juergen Sommer has been acquired from Queens Park Rangers of the English First Division and will join the Columbus Crew for the 1998 season. "Juergen is an excellent addition to our club," said Columbus GM Jamey Rootes. "He will help us to continue our tradition of world-class goalkeeping and solid defense." Sommer, who won a national championship with Indiana in 1988 and was the 1990 Collegiate Goalkeeper of the Year, joined English club Luton after graduating from IU. He was a member of the 1994 World Cup team, and he became the first American keeper to play in the Premier League when he moved to QPR in 1995. "We are very excited about the acquisition of Juergen Sommer and continuing our Indiana tradition," said Crew head coach Tom Fitzgerald. "The fact that Juergen has so much experience and was the first American goalkeeper to play in the English Premier League helps offset the loss of Brad Friedel." Sommer will report to the Crew in early March and will be ready for the season opener at Tampa Bay on March 21. He is currently in California preparing for the CONCACAF Gold Cup with the U.S. national team.
