U.S. Soccer suffered yet another tragedy this year as Lamar Hunt, a pioneer of the game here in the United States, succumbed to cancer on Wednesday night. Big Apple Soccer has a fitting tribute to the man who devoted much of his life to seeing the U.S. become a soccer nation. Hunt was asked once to list his 10 most memorable soccer moments. Among them: Seeing Pele's greatest game, the 1970 World Cup final (Italy vs. Brazil), which Brazil won 4-1, meeting Pele, attending eight World Cup finals, the achievement and success of the 1994 World Cup, which remains one of the greatest of all-time, the French fans on the Champs-Elysses after France beat Brazil, 3-0, to lift its first World Cup, the success of the 1999 Women's World Cup and the success of the women's team that year, The opening of Columbus Crew's stadium in 1999, and the MLS Championship won by Kansas City, his other team, in 2000, the 56,000-seat sellout in a rainstorm at RFK during the 1997 MLS Cup final, and the undeniable influence that MLS players had on the USA's success at the 2002 World Cup finals in Korea and Japan.
