RICHMOND, VA -- October 28, 1998 -- Soccer America FanZone, the interactive family soccer festival presented by Ukrop's and First Market Bank, returns with an expanded schedule of activities to the Richmond Centre December 10-12. The fourth annual event, held in conjunction with the NCAA Men's Soccer Championships, is designed to allow the entire Richmond-area population--beyond just ticketholders to the Semi-Finals and National Championship Game--to participate in college soccer's biggest weekend, hosted by the University of Richmond. 15,000 youth players, fans and family members are expected to attend FanZone '98. Launched to resounding success in 1995, FanZone converts the Richmond Centre into a giant soccer theme park for the weekend with 60,000 square feet of soccer displays, interactive areas, skill contests, clinics, celebrity appearances and autograph sessions. This year the Richmond Kickers will host a new 4-on-4 Teen Tourney for Richmond area youth players, in-and-around the FanZone activities. Fila USA, a leading athletic footwear and apparel company and the exclusive soccer manufacturer of FanZone, plans to enhance the 1998 event with a variety of new youth entertainment activities. For the second straight year, Fila will also present the 1998 Hermann Trophy to the top collegiate male and female soccer player in the United States, in a special ceremony to be held at FanZone Saturday December 12. Feature Soccer America FanZone interactive attractions include: Master Striker, a life-size remote-control goalie; the ever-popular Dannon Dunk-a-Ref tank; First Market Bank Heads Up, an automatic heading apparatus; The Fila Dare-Devil Goal, where participants attempt acrobatic bicycle kicks on a foam mat; The Snickers Super Speed Shot radar gun test; and Mary Jane Bread Soccer Skills Maze obstacle course. Dozens of unique games and exhibits designed for the whole family, including Sega Sports interactive soccer kiosks (and even a Moon-Bounce activity center for soccer toddlers) round out the expanded event, along with clinics and autograph appearances by a celebrity roster of professional stars, and top college and pro coaches in town for the championships.

"FanZone has become a unique property for us,"
said Lynn Berling-Manuel, publisher of Soccer America.
"Our readers are fanatical about soccer, and this event is a great vehicle for spreading the 'fun' aspect of soccer to the ever-expanding universe of young players who love it. We're forever grateful to Ukrop's, and to the local business community for helping us establish such a foothold for the event here in Richmond."
