Eight clubs -- four from MLS and four from Mexico's First Division --
will play this summer in the SuperLiga, a new competition that will
award $1 million to the winner -- the heftiest winner's purse in North
American club soccer history.
The eight entrants are the Houston Dynamo, the reigning MLS champion,
Los Angeles Galaxy, D.C. United and FC Dallas from MLS and Guadalajara,
Mexico's 2006 Torneo Apertura champion, Club America, Morelia and
Pachuca, the winner of the 2006 Copa Sudamericana.
The SuperLiga will be played July 24-Aug. 29 with a group
phase and knockout phase. All games will be held in U.S. venues.
Group A will consist of Los Angeles, FC Dallas, Guadalajara and
Pachuca. Group B teams are Houston, D.C. United, Club America and
Morelia. The entire tournament will be broadcast live in primetime by
TeleFutura in the United States and by Televisa and
TV Azteca in Mexico.
