Is MLS Worth the Investment?

Deseret Morning News columnist Brad Rock weighs in on the RSL stadium controversy, asking readers the bigger question that hangs over the investment's success or failure: is MLS worth it? The truth, he says, is that $30 million from the county and $15 million from the town of Sandy isn't an awful lot of public money to invest in a project, but taxpayers and state and county officials would be loathe to waste it.

No one knows what the future of Major League Soccer will be, but one thing's for sure, at the moment it looks brighter than it ever did. And for Real Salt Lake in particular, the future is looking up with the arrival of players like Freddy Adu and Luis Tejada.

That said, taxpayers and government officials are worried about whether or not the team and the league are solvent. Rock, who says he's known RSL owner Dave Checketts for 17 years, says Checketts is the kind of guy who knows how to sell big ideas, but even he, a friend, is having a hard time buying this one. "Supreme confidence can be a blind spot," he says.

But so can supreme skepticism. MLS looks to be on the up; the league definitely won't be folding anytime soon, even though it's lost close to $350 million in 11 years. There's the potential for big risk-reward here, which is precisely why guys like Checketts and Philip Anschutz are in it for the long haul. Read the original story...
