At long last, Real Salt Lake has lost the epic battle to build a soccer stadium in Sandy, a Salt Lake City suburb. This morning RSL owner Dave Checketts told KSL radio morning show host Doug Wright that the stadium deal was finally dead, and that RSL would likely remain in Utah one more season before being sold.

Last Friday the stadium initiative suffered what proved to be its final blow, when Salt Lake County's Debt Review Committee voted 4-0 against recommending $30 million of the county's hotel tax revenue be into the project. Earlier today, Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon held a press conference to officially pronounce its demise: "It was tough," said Corroon, "if anybody wanted this to work, it was me." He added that Checketts told him he could have a buyer for the club by Friday. Sandy Mayor Tom Dolan was also upset at the news. He told the Salt Lake Tribune the project would have been for the good of the county, but its defeat shows that the county simply can't handle major league sports. Read the original story...
