The U.S. national team will play the third game on African soil in its 101-year history when it faces 2010 World Cup host South Africa Nov. 17 in Johannesburg in the Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup.

The USA and South Africa have met once before, a 4-0 U.S. win in 2000 in which Cobi Jones scored twice and Earnie Stewart and Claudio Reyna hit one apiece.

The USA's two previous games in Africa were a 2-1 loss to Morocco in 1999 in Marrakech and 3-1 loss to Morocco in Casablanca in 1992.

Previous opponents in the annual one-game Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup, launched in 1994, included Brazil, Argentina, Holland and Nigeria.

Eight days after the Nov. 17 match, South Africa will host the Preliminary Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup that will determine the qualifying schedule for 156 countries.
