A day after scoring his seventh Spanish La Liga goal for Villarreal, New Jersey product Giuseppe Rossi underwent knee surgery to repair meniscus damage in his right knee. He is expected to be sidelined for six weeks.
The setback comes after the 19-year-old's stellar start for Villarreal, which he joined in the offseason from Italian Serie A team Parma.
Rossi left New Jersey at age 13 to join Parma's youth program. At 17, he joined Manchester United, which loaned him to Newcastle and back to Parma before selling him to Spanish club Villarreal last August for a reported $12 million.
The Italian-American has so far opted to represent Italy's youth national team.
