Canadian Dylan Sheehan headed in Howerton's flip throw in the 83rd minute of Saturday's Ivy League showdown between Brown and Dartmouth to break a 0-0 tie and lift the No. 3 Bears to a 1-0 win over No. 23 Dartmouth that clinched the 2007 Ivy championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Tournament.
The title was the Bears' record 19th overall and seventh in the past 11 years.
Howerton now has a team-high eight assists in 2007 and 19 in two-plus seasons with the Bears. He estimates a quarter of his assists have come on flip throws, a technique he first worked on at the age of 14 after seeing it used in a high game in his native Massachusetts.
The novelty of the flip throw, first popularized by the late Voga Wallace in Bruce Arena's early years at Virginia, has made Howerton a popular figure among Brown fans, who came out in force for Saturday's game.
A crowd of 3,107 turned out at Stevenson Field to watch Brown freshman Paul Grandstrand record his fourth straight shutout and improve his record of 10-0-1.
