Play resumed in Italy with four games played behind closed doors and Sunday's match between AC Milan and Livoro at the famous San Siro stadium restricted to only Milan season-ticket holders.
The return came amid tight security measures all across Italy following the death of a policeman in rioting Feb. 2 outside Catania's Massimino
Stadium. Only six Serie A stadiums were cleared to welcome fans back in
a crackdown on violence at Italian soccer matches.
San Siro was one of 12 Serie A stadiums that failed to meet safety
regulations. It was given a reprieve on Saturday after the
installation of 28 new electronic turnstiles, though only Milan's 37,000 season-ticket holders were allowed in. Police checked identity cards, searched bags and frisked fans before they passed through the turnstiles. The game marked the debut of Ronaldo for AC Milan, which won 2-1 thanks to a long-range shot by Czech Marek Jankulovski.
Inter Milan won its 15th straight game with a 2-0 victory at Chievo Verona's empty Bentegodi Stadium on goals by Adriano and Hernan Crespo. Inter coach Roberto Mancini criticized the
government's late reaction and harsh measures.
"We always react too late," he said. "Violence has been going on for
years. But to play matches like this makes little sense. And at some
grounds this situation looks like lasting until September."
ENGLAND. Goals by South Korean Park Ji-Sung and Scotsman Darren Fletcher gave Manchester United a 2-0 win over Charlton and kept it six points ahead of Chelsea, which beat Middlesbrough, 3-0, for its fifth straight shutout. Ivory Coast star Didier Drogba scored twice for the Blues, the first on a free kick and the second on a deflected free kick
FRANCE. Ligue 1 leader Lyon picked up its first league victory of 2007 with a 1-0 win over Lorient on a goal by Brazilian Fred. The five-time defending champions had earned only two out of 15 possible points in their first five games of the year. OL is still 11 points ahead of second-place Lens, a 3-1 winner over Sochaux.
GERMANY. Schalke 04 stretched its lead over Werder Bremen at the top of the Bundesliga to six points with a 2-0 win over Hertha Berlin on second-half goals by Germany international Kevin Kuranyi and Dane Peter Lovenkrands. Bremen fell to third-place VfB Stuttgart, 4-1. Striker Mario Gomez scored for Stuttgart to give him a league-leading 12 goals on the season. Fourth-place Bayern Munich defeated Arminia Bielefeld, 1-0, for Ottmar Hitzfeld's first win since
returning as head coach. After the game, Bielefeld coach Thomas von Heesen, who was due to
step down at the end of the season, quit. Van Heesen has been linked to
jobs at various Bundesliga clubs.
