"Flamengo pulled off an heroic draw against Real Potosi in unsporting and
inhumane conditions. ... We want to make it public that ... we will not take part in
matches at an altitude above the limits recommended by sports medicine. ... It
degrades the human condition and puts the life of the athletes at risk."
-- Marcio Braga, president of Brazilian club Flamengo, announcing that
his team, which, in Liberatdores Cup play, tied Bolivian club Real Potosi 2-2 in
its stadium 13,000 feet above sea level, will never again play in Potosi. The
Bolivian national team hosts games in La Paz at 12,000 feet. Azteca Stadium in
Mexico City lies 7,300 feet above sea level. The Colorado Rapids play homes
games at 5,280 feet.
