Striker Archie Thompson needed only 40 minutes to fulfill his prediction of scoring a hat trick in the Australian A-League grand final and then added two more goals in the second half as Melbourne Victory beat Adelaide United, 6-0, to win its first A-League title in front of a sellout crowd of 55,436, a record for an Australian domestic league match.
"I predicted I would get a hat trick," Thompson said. "I usually say that and it never happens ... so for it to happen on an occasion like this is incredible."
The 28-year-old Thompson scored in the 21st, 29th, 40th, 56th and 73rd minutes,
Melbourne finished the A-League regular season in first place and was the overwhelming favorite to win the grand final after last year's inaugural champion, Sydney FC, fell in the first round of the playoffs.
