Arena: Red Bulls to Add Second DP

Contrary to claims made earlier this week by New York Red Bulls owner Dietrich Mateschitz, Coach Bruce Arena says the Bulls on course to make another high-profile signing "either this week or next week." Arena indicated the player would likely occupy the second of New York's two designated player slots. Former U.S. captain Claudio Reyna took the first when he signed with the club last month. A second designated player counts $325,000 against a team's salary cap. According to the North Jersey Herald's Ives Galarcep, the Bulls' cap situation is already tight.

So who could it be? There are still whisperings in the press that Zinedine Zidane could make a shock return to the game by signing with MLS. Galarcep's unnamed sources say the club recently made fresh inquiry into securing Zidane's services. Ecuadorian forward Augustin Delgado has also repeatedly been linked to New York, although a move is now unlikely after Delgado was hit with a year-long suspension for a brawl during a match in Ecuador in December. Galarcep also throws out the possibility of Liverpool forward Robbie Fowler, who can't get a game for the Premier League giant at the moment. He would cost less and would fill the team's need for a striker. Read the original story...
