Reading's 23-year-old American midfielder Bobby Convey will miss the remainder of the English Premier League season in order to undergo surgery on a knee that has bothered him since last summer's World Cup.

"[Convey] doesn't feel right with it," Reading coach Steve Coppell said. "I have no doubt that he could have played on to the end of the season. But we don't want him coming back in preseason and him saying 'It still doesn't feel right.' Now we have the opportunity to do something about it and hopefully correct it."

Convey, who played 90 minutes for the USA in its 2-0 friendly win over Mexico Feb. 7, hasn't started in league play for Reading since October. He did start in a Feb. 17 FA Cup tie with Manchester United.

Convey has made a total of eight league starts and came off the bench once for Reading, which is in a surprise seventh place. Last season, as Reading won promotion from the second teir, Convey played in 45 league games, scoring seven goals.
