L.A. Rivalry Resumes This Weekend

Rivalries come and go, but local derbies are forever. Luis Bueno of the Press Enterprise likes the healthy enmity that's developed between Chivas USA and L.A. Galaxy fans in the Los Angeles derby's short three-year history. Players and coaches may come and go, but as long as Galaxy and Chivas fans maintain that healthy disrespect, the rivalry will continue to blossom. In turn, Bueno says that sentiment gets passed down to the players.

"We understand that a derby game is something special," Galaxy defender Abel Xavier said. "The environment changes and I hope the stadium is going to be full. ... I've played a lot of derbies ... very passionate, crazy atmosphere." The Galaxy and Chivas, which share the Home Depot Center in Carson, will play the first of three local derbies this season on Saturday. "Nobody wants to lose that game," Chivas defender Lawson Vaughn said. "It's going to be the biggest game of the year for us."

Bueno points out that neither team has been consistent so far this season (both have four points after four games), but the rivalry's momentum is definitely with Chivas after winning the last two head-to-head contests, 3-0. "That's a terrible, terrible feeling and it's not one I want to experience this year," Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin said. Chivas also had the better season, finishing first in the Western Conference, while L.A. finished second from bottom.
