An ugly scene, dubbed the "Battle of the Bridge," erupted at Stamford Bridge on Saturday following Chelsea's 2-1 win over Manchester United. Patrice Evra, Gary Neville and Park Ji-Sung were warming down after the match, when the Stamford Bridge staff approached and asked them to move in a manner that the United players claim incited what turned into a brawl. Meanwhile, referee Alan Wiley had already gone to the dressing room, unable to act or comment on the incident in his match report. United on Monday said it had filed a report with the Football Association, to which an FA spokesman responded: "We will obviously be asking Chelsea to let us see their CCTV footage of the incident."
The FA added that it would gather "all relevant information" before ruling on the matter, which has already drawn varying explanations from onlookers. United striker Carlos Tevez was quoted as saying his teammate Evra was subject to "a grave insult." He added: "I think that the security cameras will show the provocation we received. I have never seen anything like this in my career ... if the FA opens an investigation, we will cooperate and happily give our version of what happened." Tevez didn't mention the groundskeepers' insult to Evra, but the Daily Mirror reports that United distanced had itself from claims of racism. United and Chelsea are level on 81 points heading into the final two games, but the former maintains its lead at the top due to a vastly superior goal difference.
