Bornstein, who started for the USA at left back in its 2-1 win over Mexico in last year's Gold Cup final, suffered the injury in training on Thursday. An MRI taken after Friday's practice revealed the extent of the injury, which will not require surgery.
Bornstein, the the 2006 MLS Rookie of the Year, was one of three Chivas USA players who had played every minute of the 2008 season, alongside midfielder Jesse Marsch and goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
