Man. United's Ferguson once again woos Berbatov

[TRANSFER TALK] Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov nearly moved from Tottenham Hotspur last summer after he scored 23 goals in his first season with the London club.

At the time, Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson was one of his suitors. In the end, Berbatov decided to stay at White Hart Lane and Ferguson satisfied his striking needs by signing Argentine Carlos Tevez.

The courtship, however, has resumed this summer. After another season with 23 goals, Berbatov has made it clear that he wants to play in the Champions League next year, something Tottenham can't offer. Ferguson heard the plea and has contacted Tottenham about a possible deal for the lanky forward.

Ferguson is high on Berbatov.

"He is a good player," he said. "He is a big strong, lad too. People don't realize how strong he is. He is well-balanced and hard to shake off the ball."

United is reported to have offered somewhere between $40 and $56 million for Berbatov. The figure falls below Tottenham's $60 million demands but the club may opt to sell for a lower price in order to fund its own transfer desires.

Tottenham boss Juande Ramos is reportedly resigned to losing the 27-year-old and has left him out of this season's plans. Ramos may also have to deal with the departure of two other first-team forwards. Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has publicly declared his interest in Ireland captain Robbie Keane, while Sunderland and Everton are rumored to be interested in English forward Darren Bent.

Ramos, who became Spurs manager last October, has already brought in a few high-profile names to bolster the Tottenham squad.

Earlier this summer, 19-year-old Mexican striker Giovanni dos Santos joined Spurs from Barcelona for $10 million. Croatian midfielder Luka Modric and Brazilian goalkeeper Gomes have also joined the Tottenham first team for $33 million and $14 million, respectively.

Ramos is targeting a number of players with the funds from Berbatov's expected move. England midfielder David Bentley may make the move from Blackburn for $34 million. Spurs is also targeting Espanyol striker Luis Garcia for $20 million.
