[OFF THE POST] Michael Keane consumed one too many bowls of Irish stew, and it's cost him his job. The midfielder was dismissed from Irish club St Patrick's Athletic for being overweight. The club terminated its $6,000 a week contract with the 25-year-old.

Keane is filing an appeal against his former employers, pointing to his perfect attendance at training sessions. But the club is pressing on, claiming it sent a letter to Keane earlier in the year demanding that he lose weight, and even set a goal weight for the player. According to the club, Keane's failure to meet the target was a breach of contract.

If Keane's appeal is successful, St Patrick's Athletic will have to pay out the rest of his contract, which amounts to $400,000, or about 50,000 servings of fish and chips.
