Italian police have issued another arrest warrant against former Cosmos star Giorgio Chinaglia in connection with a probe into a Naples-based organized crime group's attempt to buy Italian club Lazio with laundered money.
Police arrested seven people and sought three others who tried to buy Lazio with money coming from the illicit activities of the Casalesi clan, a group of the Naples-based Camorra crime syndicate, according to Rome police.
Two years ago, authorities first ordered Chinaglia's arrest on charges of extortion and insider trading at Lazio. Chinaglia, who starred at Lazio in the 1970s and was briefly its president in the 1980s, is accused of trying to influence the price of Lazio shares. At the time, Chinaglia, who lives in the United States, claimed to have the backing of a Hungarian company. He has denied any wrongdoing.
