Loaded with current and former U.S. collegians, Canada held host China to a 1-1 tie on Saturday in Tianjin to maintain its share of the Group E lead with the Steel Roses.
Former Soccer America Women's College Player of the Year Christine Sinclair put Canada ahead with her first Olympic goal in the 32nd minute. Xu Yuan equalized only two minutes later on a breakaway to the delight of the crowd of more then 52,000.
The closest either team came to scoring in the second half came when UCLA's Kara Lang hit the post for Canada, which had beaten Argentina, 2-1, in the opener.
Even with two third-place teams assured of advancing, Canada is not yet assured of advancing, however. It faces Sweden on Tuesday in their final group game. Sweden recovered from its 2-1 loss to China in its opening game to beat Argentina, 1-0.
