Former MLS goalkeeper Dusty Hudock was the hero, stopping the deciding kick by Seattle substitute Kevin Forrest to give Charleston the edge in the shootout after the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Hudock was a reserve on the Chicago Fire's 1998 MLS Cup championship team.
Both teams showed their intent to reach the Open Cup final by playing reserves in league games this past weekend in order to rest starters for their semifinal.
Seattle went ahead on an own goal by Battery defender John Wilson in the 20th minute, but the Battery leveled 13 minutes later through Randi Patterson's close-range effort.
