[AMERICANS IN GERMANY] Neven Subotic, a former U.S. U-17 national team player, scored the winning goal in his debut for German First Division club Borussia Dortmund in its 3-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen on the opening day of the 2008-09 Bundesliga season. Subotic, 19, joined Dortmund in the offseason from Second Division Mainz 05.

Subotic was born in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1988 to a Serbian family that immigrated to Germany when he was 2 in 1990 before moving to the USA in 1999.

Hannover 96's Steve Cherundolo, the only other American to see First Division action on opening day, played the full 90 in what was his 183rd Bundesliga game as his team fell, 3-0, to Schalke 04.
