Romanian striker Adrian Mutu will appeal the $27 million fine he has been ordered to pay his former club Chelsea, calling FIFA's ruling "unjust" and "inhumane."
The world soccer governing body last week ruled that the player must make the compensation payment after testing positive for cocaine while at Chelsea in 2004. The club sacked him after the test, but he has since rebuilt his career in Italy at Fiorentina.
"This is an unjust and inhumane sentence," said Mutu, confirming that his lawyers were studying the case. "We are going to appeal. This sanction is not right, because I don't think I have committed a crime that merits such an amount." Both world players' union FifPro and the Romanian Footballers' Trade Union have pledged their support to Mutu.
