[WORLD CUP 2010] Midfielder Steven Gerrard, who played in Liverpool's 1-0 win over Standard Liege on Wednesday to earn Liverpool a spot in UEFA Champions League group play, is scheduled for groin surgery that will likely force him out of England's two World Cup qualifiers next month.

England plays at Andorra on Sept. 6 and at Croatia Sept. 10 later in Group 6 qualifiers.

"Steven has a groin problem and he will have an operation," said Liverpool coach Rafa Benitez after the win over Standard Liege. "He has been playing some games in pain. He has not been fit and we decided this week the best moment for the operation is after this game.
