Three cheers for Toronto FC, the first team in MLS history to
completely sell out of season tickets. In just five months, the
league's first Canadian franchise sold 14,000 season seats out of a total capacity of 20,000 at the new BMO Field, which is on schedule for completion in time for Toronto's home opener on April 28. The team also
sold out its executive suites.
It could have sold more. Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd.
says it capped season sales at 14,000 to encourage walk-up sales on
game days. "We've had phenomenal momentum since launching Toronto FC last May and the response we've got with respect to season seat sales
tells us that soccer fans across the [greater Toronto area] are excited
about their new team," said a happy Tom Anselmi, Executive vice
president and chief operating officer of MLSE.
So who's to blame for all this excitement? David Beckham, perhaps. Following the big Becks announcement, team execs said season ticket sales saw a huge big spike. But Becks can't take all the credit. After
all, he's only scheduled to play at BMO once next year. The return of local golden boy and league all-star Dwayne De Rosario with Houston will certainly be a big draw, but Toronto also has players of its own to be excited about: Edson Buddle, Conor Casey, Maurice Edu (this year's No. 1 draft pick) and Welsh international Carl Robinson, to name
a few. Read the original story...
