For the second time in two years, Notre Dame traveled to North Carolina and beat the Tar Heels at Fetzer Field. Friday's 1-0 win moved Notre Dame to No. 2 in this week's Soccer America Women's Top 25 -- the place UNC held last week.

All-America forward Brittany Bock scored less than six minutes into the second half, delivering a curling 30-yard shot over a furiously backpedaling Anna Rodenbough, who had just stopped Kerri Hanks on a breakaway.

Much has been made of the Irish attack of Bock, Hanks and Michelle Weissenhofer, but it was in midfield that Notre Dame won the game, shutting down stars Yael Averbuch and Tobin Heath.

"We're very pleased with this win and especially happy with the play of our defense," Irish coach Randy Waldrum said. "We kept our shape well and didn't get flustered when they made their run at us after our goal in the second half. I was particularly impressed with the way [freshman defender] Jessica Schuveiller and [junior midfielder] Courtney Rosen managed the game and kept their composure in some tough situations."

FSU had scored 17 goals in its first four games, but sophomore goalkeeper Katie Fraine was outstanding with a career-high seven saves.

"I thought she played really well," Florida coach Becky Burleigh said. "I also thought she kind of negated their throw-ins, which have been a problem for other teams, by just picking off those balls out of the air. She had a terrific performance. That is her strength as a keeper, dominating her box."

She set the tone early in the opening half, making diving save on Amanda DaCosta's shot.

PANTHER PUSH. Wisconsin-Milwaukee pushed its record to 6-0 with a 1-0 win over Illinois State, continuing its school record start to the 2008 season.

The Panthers ended a stretch of six games in 16 days to start the season, eclipsing their best game start ever, which had been 5-0-1 in 1997.
 
"We played a lot of games in a short period of time," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "I'm just glad we survived it. We have some people dinged up, but we have put ourselves in a great spot to be in. This will be the first time that we have been in the national rankings in back-to-back weeks."
