Oguchi Onyewu won his team's battle with Tim Howard's Everton when Standard Liege beat the Toffees, 2-1, and advanced to the group stage of the UEFA Cup with a 4-3 victory on aggregate.

Brad Friedel was in goal for Aston Villa in its 1-1 tie with Bulgaria's Litex Lovech that was good enough to win their series 4-2 on aggregate.

The European seasons of other Americans ended on Thursday. Neven Subotic started for Borussia Dortmund in a 2-0 win at Udinese that evened their series, but the Italian club prevailed on penalties.

Carlos Bocanegra was in the lineup for French club Rennes in a 1-0 loss to Twente, which won their series on the away goal from its 2-1 loss in France two weeks ago.
