Brazil coach Dunga has been under intense pressure to quit because of his team's mediocre performances in World Cup 2010 qualifying, but it was Alfio Basile, coach of rival Argentina, who quit one day after his team's 1-0 loss to Chile.

The 64-year-old Basile, known as "Coco," was in his second stint on the job after coaching Argentina at the 1994 World Cup.

The loss to Chile left Argentina in third place, eight points behind South American leader Paraguay, but still is in good shape to qualify for South Africa 2010.

Argentina had ended a four-game winless streak in qualifying with a 2-1 victory over Uruguay on Saturday.

Names mentioned as possible replacements included Argentina youth coach Sergio Batista, River Plate's Diego Simeone and Miguel Angel Russo of San Lorenzo.
