Former Polish national team coach Janusz Wojcik was detained Wednesday in Warsaw and will "most likely" be charged with active and passive corruption, according to Polish Justice Minister and Attorney General Zbigniew Cwiakalski.

The former player and member of parliament for the Self Defence Party is accused of taking "large amounts of bribes". The minister would not reveal figures, but indicated that it involves "several hundred thousand zlotys" (there are around three zlotys to the dollar).

The arrest is one of the most high profile so far in connection with a long running investigation into corruption in Polish soccer. So far 160 people from 52 football clubs have been charged. Wojcik was national team coach from 1997-1999.

Meanwhile, Reuters on Wdnesday quoted Polish news agency PAP as saying that Polish Football Association (PZPN) Secretary General Zbigniew Krecina had been charged with mismanagement of funds. "Krecina is favorite to replace PZPN head Michal Listkiewicz in an October 30 election that is being held to avoid sanctions from world body FIFA and the potential loss of the country's right to co-host Euro 2012 with Ukraine," the agency reported.
