Rote, the son of an NFL star of the same name, graduated from Sewanee in 1972 and returned to his native Dallas to play for the NASL's Tornado. He was the 1973 NASL Rookie of the Year and the first American to lead the league in scoring.
He drew national attention as a three-time winner of ABC's Superstars Competition.
Rote now lives in Memphis, where he has worked as an agent for many years. His firm is one of the leading agencies representing NFL players and coaches.
