English club Chelsea, which previously announced partnerships with North Carolina's CASL and New Jersey's Match Fit Academy, is expanding its U.S. super youth club network by teaming up with Los Angeles Futbol Club, the 2008 U.S. Soccer Development Academy U-17/18 runner-up.
LAFC, a three-year-old club and academy based in La Canada, Calif., will now be LAFC Chelsea and host Chelsea tournaments, training sessions and a player and coach exchange program.
As a result of the partnership, LAFC Chelsea will offer more scholarships for young athletes with financial hardship.
"LAFC was created to provide an affordable option for skilled players to play top-tier club soccer," LAFC President Don Sheppard said. "We've been able to reach out to economically disadvantaged communities to recruit some of the best talent in the United States."
