Barclays To Review EPL Sponsorship

Barclays Bank, which sponsors the English Premier League, plans to review its worldwide sports deals, casting doubt upon its future backing of the league once the current contract runs out in 2010. The U.K.'s third largest bank has sponsored the league since 2001, with the latest three-year deal worth $99 million.

"There will be a thorough review of our sponsorships to make sure that we are getting a strong return on investment across the board," said Libby Chambers, chief marketing officer for Barclays' global retail and commercial banking. She said that sponsoring the EPL had raised the bank's profile around the world, but that soccer was not exempt from the review.

Barclays already sponsors the ATP's season-ending Masters tennis tournament and the Dubai Championships, golf's Scottish Open and Singapore Open, and rugby union's Churchill Cup. Like all other banks, it has been hit by the global credit crisis.
