Gomez To Replace Gallardo At D.C.?

Steven Goff has "an unsubstantiated hunch ... that something is brewing" at D.C. United involving its current and past Argentine playmakers, Marcelo Gallardo, 33, and Christian Gomez, 34, now at the Colorado Rapids.

United's investors, he writes, "would love to dump Gallardo's bloated contract" because they realize the player's "past his prime, underwent additional surgery this winter and does not have a significant impact on ticket sales." Argentine club Estudiantes is reportedly interested in Gallardo, and the player has been excused from United's opening training sessions to continue rehab and take care of "personal matters" back home.

At the same time, Goff continues, Colorado "is aggressively trying to move Gomez, who does not fit into coach Gary Smith's plans, and earns around $400,000 per season." Interest from FC Dallas has passed, while "Gomez associates say he would welcome a return to Washington." To add to the intrigue, "two contacts did not want to address the Gomez matter under any circumstances and others did not return calls."
