[MLS] At halftime of the Seattle-New York broadcast on ESPN2, MLS Commissioner Don Garber said he was headed after the game down south to Portland, and it wasn't to see how the roses are doing. MLS has scheduled a news conference for Friday, and it is expected to announce Portland as its 18th franchise.

Such an announcement would come two days after MLS announced its 17th team -- Vancouver -- also to begin 2011.

Merritt Paulson has headed the bid to bring an MLS team to Portland and received public financial help in renovating PGE Park, which the USL-1 Timbers share with the Portland Beavers AAA baseball team, and building a baseball stadium for the Beavers. PGE Park will be redesigned for soccer.

The cost of the stadium projects: $88.8 million.
