Red Bulls Arena to Fulfill Overdue Promise

"Building for their future on a brown field of dreams in this downtrodden industrial city," the N.Y. Red Bulls and their new arena will finally have fulfilled "the long-delayed promise of a soccer palace on the Passaic River" after being in discussion for almost a decade, writes Jack Bell of the New York Times.

Expected to be ready for the 2010 season, the Red Bulls' new home is said to be just a 20-minute train ride from Manhattan and is expected to draw a significant number of fans that for the past 13 seasons "have been looking the other way because they don't like the environment at Giants Stadium," according to the NY team's managing director Erik Stover.

With a location chosen a decade ago by former MetroStars executive Nick Sakiewicz, the new stadium is modeled after those in Europe and is intended to reward all the fans who "have lived through years of undelivered promises," says Stove, who predicts that "the day someone can't get a ticket to a game, this thing takes off."
