After winning the the Copa Libertadores last season, Ecuador's Liga de Quito is on the verge of getting eliminated from the competition after a 2-0 away loss to Brazilian club Palmeiras on Tuesday.
Liga still has a mathematical chance of qualifying for the tournament's last 16, but its advancing depends on an unlikely combination of results, as well as a hefty swing in goal difference.
Liga's loss in Brazil means it sets at the bottom of Group 1 with four points. Colo Colo of Chile leads Group 1 with seven points, ahead of Palmeiras and fellow Brazilian club Sport Recife on goal difference. Only once before has a defending champ exited in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores.
