[AMERICANS ABROAD] Brad Friedel was in goal Monday night for Aston Villa, which ended its 12-game winless streak with a 1-0 victory over Hull City

The win moved Villa back into fifth place, two points ahead of Everton, and assured it a place in next season's Europa Cup, the successor to the UEFA Cup.

Friedel had little to do, but his opposite number, California-born Boaz Myhill, had a busy evening for the Tigers, who have won only one of their last 19 games.

Myhill, a Welsh international, is the son of an American father and a Welsh mother. They moved to England when he was 1.

Myhill joined Villa at the age of 12 and was on the first-team roster for three seasons, playing on loan at five clubs, before joining Hull in 2003.
