Pre-tournament favorite Boca Juniors crashed out of the Copa Libertadores in a surprise 1-0 loss to Uruguay visitor Defensor Sporting on Thursday. Diego De Souza scored with a fierce shot in the 28th minute in the Bombonera to lift Defensor into the quarterfinals, 3-2 on aggregate.
That set up quarterfinals of Cruzeiro vs. Sao Paulo, Caracas vs. Gremio, Estudiantes vs. Defensor and Palmeiras vs. Nacional. The first legs are next Wednesday and Thursday with the return legs a week later. Brazilian clubs have dominated the competition so far, with four teams through to the last eight.
Boca had won the title four times since 2000 and was aiming for a record-equaling seventh crown. Defensor has never won the competition and equaled its best performance by reaching the quarterfinals.
