College soccer did not have much of a following in 1970 when Smith earned All-Americans honors, but he was so good that fans came just to see him.
He was only a seventh-round NBA draft pick in 1971 but he scored 26,262 points in his long career. The highlight came in 1978 when he the MVP of the NBA All-Star Game with 27 points off the bench.
Smith grew up in Long Island. After retiring, he worked for the NBA, coached in the CBA and most recently worked for a casino.
