New England Tests Veteran Striker Jankauskas

Edgaras Jankauskas, the 34-year-old Lithuanian striker, has appeared more than 50 times for his country. Jankauskas played for Portuguese giants FC Porto when the club won the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League in 2003 and 2004. He also starred for Benfica, Real Sociedad, Hearts and CSKA Moscow at various points during his lengthy career.

Bit that resume wasn't enough to earn Jankauskas a deal with the New England Revolution without a trial. "You can't sign someone on what they did previously," Revs coach Steve Nicol said. "You have to see what he can give you now." Jankauskas' recent club history is decidedly less glamorous than the heights he had reached earlier in his career. After ending a loan stint at Hearts in 2007, Jankauskas spent time in Cyprus and Portugal before playing last season with Latvian powerhouse Skonto Riga.

Nicol and the Revolution will make a decision when Jankauskas wraps up his four-day trial on Saturday. But "so far so good," Nicol said. "We're getting a feel for him," defender Jay Heaps said. "He's working into the group well. He's a big guy. He's good in the air. Now we just have to get him playing every day, see his speed of play and see if he's going to be someone we're going to build on for the rest of the season." The Revs are looking for a target striker so that makeshift forward Shalrie Joseph can return to his natural position in central midfield. Read the original story...
