Universidad de Chile advanced to the next round of the Copa Sudamericana, South America's No. 2 club tournament behind the Copa Libertadores, with a 1-0 away win over Colombian club Deportivo Cali on Tuesday. Walter Montillo struck in the 69th minute to ensure advancement after Cali lost the first leg 2-1 in the Chilean capital Santiago on Aug. 4. Universidad is the first club to progress from the preliminary round and join reigning champion Internacional of Brazil in the last 16. As title-holder, Internacional was given a preliminary-round bye.

In other results, Tigre beat fellow Argentine club San Lorenzo 2-1. San Lorenzo, coached by former Inter Milan and Lazio midfielder Diego Simeone, will host Tigre in the return leg on Sept. 15. The preliminary round continues through August and September.
