As quickly as he came to Notts County, Sol Campbell has left. After playing just one game for his new club, which Campbell joined earlier this month for a $66,000-a-week salary, the defender asked to be let go. Notts signed Campbell as part of an ambitious project to elevate the League Two team to Premier League status, which the club hoped to achieve under the guidance of new director of soccer Sven Goran Erikkson. But Campbell appears disillusioned with the club's level of investment in players and facilities.

A club statement read: ''Notts County FC confirms that Sol Campbell has asked to cancel his five year contract with the Club, this has been agreed by mutual consent." Peter Trembling, the club's Executive Chairman added: ''Sometimes decisions are made, people make wrong decisions and Sol has decided this is not where he wants to be now. We're not going to kick up a fuss about it. If he wants to go, he needs to go and we genuinely wish him all the best.'' Campbell cannot sign for a new club until January of next year.
