McInnes golden goal rescues Golden Hurricane
[TULSA 4 SAINT LOUIS 3] Tulsa recovered from blowing 2-0 and 3-1 leads and giving up an equalizer with five seconds left in regulation to beat Saint Louis, 4-3, on Ashley McInnes' golden goal seven minutes into overtime Sunday afternoon in NCAA Tournament second-round action at Hurricane Stadium.
Austin Neal and Blaine Gonsalves scored less than two minutes apart midway through the first half to give Tulsa a 2-0 lead. On a counter-attack off a Billiken corner, Jose Parada raced three-quarters of the length of the field and drew goalie Ross Kaufman off his line. With a pair of defenders on his back, Parada calmly chipped the ball over Kaufman for the third Tulsa goal.
"I think we started the game really well," Tulsa coach Tom McIntosh said. "We got forward quickly, created chances and caused them problems, but our back line got too deep and we lost a lot of loose balls. We battled well and responded well in overtime. This was a good win against a really good team, and now we are going to prepare for Northwestern."
Freshman forward Alex Sweetin scored SLU's first two goals, and senior James Dice recorded a goal with just five seconds left in regulation to knot the score at 3-3 heading into overtime.
"That game was an example of what these guys are all about, they never say die and battle until the very end," SLU coach Dan Donigan said. "Credit Tulsa, they are a great team and scored a great goal to send us home. This is one of the most mentally-toughest teams I've had. We have a bright future with this group. I'm sad for the seniors, but they should be proud. They led this team to a great season."
